As Pratchett says elsewhere, fantasy is an exercise bicycle for the mind; it doesn't take you anywhere, but it tones up muscles that might. When trying to get the pigs who pull the Hogfather's sleigh (Gouger, Rooter, Tusker and Snouter) to move it is suggested that "You could try "Pig-hooey!" anthill inside " and the egg timer on HEX . A very silly festive fairytale for children of all ages, with a no-nonsense (in the primmest, properest sense of the word), kick-ass heroine, set in a world that looks remarkably like ours, in a thaumaturgical, Victorian Gothic kind of way, considering it's actually a disc balanced on some elephants, which are balanced on a turtle. Sure, I missed a few funny character conversations (Like the "Give-the-Dean-a-bag-of-money-gnome" or the Cheerful Fairy), it also lacked certain elements of the book, including the YMPA, Igor's Bar or the Death of Rats (who is much more important in the book) but you cannot include everything from a 300 page novel into a say 100 page movie script. I eagerly anticipated the adaptation of the Hogfather although having read it a couple of times and still not felt I really 'got it' I wondered how well it could be adapted for television. When Chickenwire is killed by the wardrobe of his childhood nightmares, Violet, the Tooth Fairy comments" There Archchancellor Ridcully says (in regard to the Cheerful Fairy) "I thought you had to clap your hands and say you believed in 'em" a reference to James Barrie's novel When Mr. Teatime meets Susan and is asked how he knew her he refers to There are many references to the idealized world of childhood in the novel and Pratchett plays on this supposed real vs ideal world in many sections, particularly when dealing with the Cheerful Fairy, as well as at the Tooth Fairy's home.
This was like watching Eragon or Narnia. So, not a bad film but not a satisfying translation of a Pratchett book and that is the worst of it. In particular the Wizards of Unseen University were extremely boring. Every one of these actors is talented and some of them shone but frankly I found the only other person I wanted to see on the screen was Peter Guinness; he had presence in his tiny bits that worked. The Virginia in the Hogfather has the same concerns about Santa/The Hogfather's existence but focuses mainly on the list of presents she wants- most of which are violent ones. From the mind of Terry Pratchett comes "Hogfather, " a fantastic miniseries set in a parallel universe. Susan visits the Hogfather's Hogswatchnight which occurs on the 32nd of December has obvious parallels to Christmas but it takes its name from the Scottish celebration for the last day of the calendar year - Hogmanay. The Cheerful Fairy is written about in the same style used by such early children's authors as Enid Blyton where the world is cloyingly sweet, moral and wonderful. This is a direct reference to the story and song ofPratchett in his footnotes on aliens (when Susan and the oh God are discussing the Tooth Fairy) says "The truth may be out there but lies are inside your head". Saving Christmas: The book sees the Hogfather (the Discworld equivalent of Santa Claus) assassinated (for want of a better word, since the Hogfather is a sort of immortal quasi-deity), and Death forced to stand in for him. 22 out of 35 found this helpful. Who was the narrator? The only being that can take his place? Having read the book, I thought there would be far too much back-story and explanation required to tell the complex story effectively. The faithfulness to the story - keeping it at nearly 4 hours to ensure the minimum amount of cutting. I'm so glad Pratchett let them do this, and I can only hope and pray that they continue - let's see The Last Continent, Jingo, Maskerade, Reaper Man, Small Gods! Opposing them are a bumbling group of wizards, a babysitter who is more than she appears, and the personification of death itself.
