Was this review helpful? The canadian bilingual disc is the one to get as certain actors in the movie said their lines in French and then was overdubbed in english. Therefore we are left with the increasingly unstable Trelkovsky (Polanski)--a meek Polish man who has obtained an apartment due to the previous tenant's suicide--to guide us through a world of escalating fear and uncertainty. But the most weired thing is of course his transformation in Simone Choule and the fact, that he doesn´t know, who he really is. He soon realizes that his neighbors are extremely sensitive and don't like the slightest disturbance. All of them terrifying in their own way. And then they are found to be true again. Roman Polanski stays true to his style from Rosemary's Baby and Repulsion. Creepier than anything David Lynch, and that shows what a great director Polanski is since this is not his usual type of work, and it is BRILLIANT. Meanwhile, I moved out and didn’t check back in with the landlord for months.Once the lease was up, I walked into my landlord’s office, thinking I had pulled it off, my absence undetected. Roman Polanski's masterpiece – The Tenant succeeds to reach our hearts and makes us give further thought about multiple issues brought up in the movie. And I was mesmerized.
Was this review helpful? Once I watched The Tenant and interpreted it as a horror movie. I don’t use the word “addictive” to describe many films, but it applies in this case. The life of the hero, Trelkovsky, seemed surrounded by evil, secret forces trying to drive him mad. Here's hoping that the Criterion collection will restore and release this film in its proper technical glory on blu-ray disc in the near future! Still, there is plenty to enjoy here including a fine performance from a gorgeous looking Isabelle Adjani and good old Shelly Winters is as reliable as ever. All of them terrifying in their own way. Polanski stars as Trelkovsky, a quiet, timid file clerk increasingly overshadowed with dread and fear after he moves into his new apartment.

Roman Polanski's "The Tenant" was the official French entry at Cannes last May, and in the riot to get into the press screening one man was thrown through a glass door and two more found themselves amid the potted palms. Unfortunately, [Roman Polanski's] current film, The Tenant veers dangerously close to parody and evokes not horror but laughter. Scene by scene, Polanski allows the tension to build up in such a way that by the end the viewer is left both exhausted and wanting more. I'm a pretty old dude, old enough to remember the taste of Oreos and Coke as they were 50-55 years ago, when every taste for a kid was fresh.
