It gave me a new perpective on shamanism since the book I read before was "Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy" by Mircea Eliade which is a colder or third person account and "The Way of the Shaman" by Michael Harner is a full blown first person account, he was in the bloody jungles and almost died for f sake.I wasn't impressed, there was a lot of food for thought but nothing that stood out. This book describes in great detail what it is like to undertake a shamanic journey, and what can be expected. Collecting information on shamanism as practiced in dozens of indigenous traditions Harner presents non-pharmacologic practices that westerners can take part in that may introduce them into the consciousness states utilized by shamans in their craft. The Kartoss Gambit (The Way of the Shaman: Book #2) LitRPG series This is a significant improvement on book 5 (don't mention the rip off Hour of Pain though) but it is still very jumbles and the beginning couple of chapters are all over the place.
It still interests me greatly as a way to process perception and to deal with life. However book 5 and now book 6 have felt like an author trying to end a series because they ran out of in game plotlines - I found the story to be very contrived in places and events occur that are just plain ridiculous and unbelievable (I know in a fantasy litrpg story ridiculous and unbelievable are normal but I mean even beyond that). This was a really interesting book for me, it provides the basics for shamanistic "journeying" and a lot of description of the experience of others. When I picked this book I expected to get a bit more research on the subject, not the author's interpretation of what shamanism is to him. What is it like for a small flap-eared goblin herbalist to play the role of Gnat is on his voyage with the Shiamiru, all the while trying to find backup for humanity among the great spacefaring races. The contrast of quality between Dark Paladin and Way of the Shaman is worlds apart. There are a lot of cautions that newbies should not attempt some of the more advanced exercises until they master the basics.
