Open gingival embrasures after orthodontic treatment in adults: Prevalence and etiology Jacklyn R. Kurth, DDS, MSD,a and Vincent G. Kokich, DDS, MSDb Auburn and Tacoma, Wash The purposes of this study were to determine the prevalence of posttreatment open gingival embrasures in The prevalence of posttreatment open gingival embrasures in adult orthodontic patients was 38%. Approximately 42 per cent of the subjects in the shorter treatment group had open gingival embrasures, and 44.4 per cent of those whose treatment took longer than 3 years had open gingival embrasures. Digital images of the pretreatment maxillary models and posttreatment maxillary central incisor periapical radiographs were made to measure the pretreatment and posttreatment variables. The purposes of this study were to determine the prevalence of posttreatment open gingival embrasures in adult orthodontic patients and to examine the association of pretreatment maxillary incisor malalignment, posttreatment alveolar bone height, interproximal contact position, root angulation, crown shape, and embrasure area with open gingival embrasures. Open gingival embrasures or "black triangles" can be an undesirable outcome of adult orthodontic treatment. Objectives: To investigate the incidence of and contributing factors to open gingival embrasures between the central incisors after orthodontic treatment. The incidence of open gingival embrasures between the central incisors was 22% and 36% in the maxilla and the mandible, respectively.

Clipboard, Search History, and several other advanced features are temporarily unavailable. A subsample of 119 patients was identified for measurement and divided into 2 groups: normal gingival embrasures and open gingival embrasures.

Materials and methods: One hundred posttreatment patients (29 men and 71 women; mean age, 24.7 years) were divided retrospectively into occurrence and nonoccurrence groups based on intraoral photographs. COVID-19 is an emerging, rapidly evolving situation. The incidence of open gingival embrasures between the central incisors was 22% and 36% in the maxilla and the mandible, respectively. Open gingival embrasures were found to have more divergent root angulations and more divergent or triangular-shaped crown forms than normal gingival embrasures. Pretreatment maxillary central incisor rotation and overlap were not statistically associated with posttreatment open gingival embrasures. If all the papilla are at the same level, and the adjacent gingival embrasures are closed, you know you have a problem of contact length creating the open embrasure.

Open Gingival Embrasures After Orthodontic Treatment in Adults Author(s): Vincent G. Kokich, Sr., DDS, MSD;Jacklyn R. Kurth, DDS, MSD Date Added: 8/1/2001. A posttreatment alveolar boneinterproximal contact distance greater than 5.5 mm was associated with open gingival embrasures.
