Considering how few spells know the sorcerer has compared to other classes, this frees up a lot for versatility. If you'd like it's totally possible to play an effective 10 cha sorcerer. The only option that really made sense to use was the quarterstaff.

I played a Draconic fire-themed melee sorcerer, and using GFB, at certain levels I mathematically deal more damage through melee GFB than other sorcs (and myself) could do at range with the firebolt cantrip.Use a finesse weapon like scimitar, and forget ALL about Strength, and instead worry about Cha, Dex, Con.If you go this GFB route, its really nice being hyper-deadly at range (doing what sorcs do best) but if the enemy closes the gap (or you do) they get a nice surprise when you actually do Storm Sorc has great AoE potential, but only at lvl 6+.
Since the introduction of cantrips in 5e you don't even need a backup option for when you run out of spell slots. You will never get more melee attacks, while your damage cantrips scale very well.

Not to mention the domain spells: Thunderwave and Fog Cloud. Conclusion – Our Take on the Shadow Magic Sorcerer Sneak in Darkness: Shadow Sorcerer 5E The Shadow Magic Sorcerer is one of the most potent defensive sorcerer subclasses.

I used the two-handed option so I would be on a d8 damage dice. Once Lihrogar joined his other monstrous companions, he continued to deceive them regarding his intellectual prowess. Don't rely on that Shadow ability for "tankiness". At some point it will become very difficult to justify using your action for a melee attack …

The background lead to a lot of interesting role playing opportunities, though I tried not to lead the other PCs too far astray. D&D 5e.

As far as attacks go, I'd likely take either booming blade or green flame blade as a cantrip, so I'd sort of be doing both.If you're aren't too worried about the sunlight sensitivity, the Duergar could be cool.

You gain some basic utility features, anti-death measures, a summon, and fantastic mobility.

Draconic Resilience gives you an Armor Class of 13+Dexterity and an extra hit point every level, giving me an edge in a low level campaign.
If I was going to go DEX, I'd go this route.I want to do melee, and I like the idea of a Dwarf who wants to be a warrior, but is "cursed" with being a mage. Remember that there are a lot of good spells that require no attack rolls or saves. Otherwise both Hill and Mountain Dwarf are both very good. The storm sorcerer's level one ability is good for getting out of melee at low levels when your health gets low. Since this is one of the main reasons to play a sorcerer, I want to focus a little bit on my choices here. The Shadow Magic sorcerer has some great features utilizing the darkness and added combat utility with the Hound of Ill Omen feature to really make sure your spells stick onto your targets. It was a fun concept presented by our DM and I wanted to embrace it fully.

In game this will translate to heavy reliance on throwing up shadow sorcerer darkness, twinning/quickening Booming Blades and using the mobile feat to dart in, toss down Booming Blade on 1-3 enemies, then disengaging and circling. Speaking of spells, my cantrips were the real bread and butter of the melee focus. We played this campaign starting from level 1 up to 5, so I’m going to discuss the build at level 5.

My choices were Subtle Spell and Quickened Spell. This would be my choice for a dexterity sorcerer, possibly even a Drow elvish sorcerer (I can't in good conscience play with sunlight sensitivity though), but I'm not sure how well that would go.

Letting this seemingly harmless… ... One of the big problems with playing a melee sorcerer is the lack of proficiencies. You will never get more melee attacks, while your damage cantrips scale very well.

While this bears little on the build of the melee sorcerer, it added a fun element to playing the character. As others have said with GFB and some high stats, you can get some crazy damage.Sounds like a fun idea, but why would you swing a hammer in melee when you can do so much more damage safely from range? Sorcerers aren’t exactly known for being tanky characters, especially on a 1d6 hit die, but a high con and the Draconic Resilience trait really helped with that. If you want to add some chaos you could even chose to have yourself roll a die every once in a while to see if you randomly cast a spell accidentally.Hmmm, I hadn't thought about that.

Here’s my final spell list that I ended the campaign with:They get even better when you add in the sorcerer meta magics. At some point it will become very difficult to justify using your action for a melee attack when every other option would do so much more.Just be sure how to handle that before you commit to the idea.Yeah, I'm not going for efficiency as much as fun/RP.
