It used to be a short link from New Oxford Street to Endell Street in Central London, but it now forms part of a bigger one-way system and carries westbound traffic on the A40, so interestingly it was replaced by exactly the same road that ousted the original A403. Junction 19 on the M1 motorway forms the intersection between three major elements of the motorway and trunk road network – the M1 and M6 motorways and the A14 Trunk Road.

Junction 19 of the M1 provides a strategic link to all points of the UK, via the M1, M6 and A14 , for over 142, 000 road users every day. In 1951 that road became part of the A40, a number by which it's much better known, and the number A403 was then vacant for a number of years before finding a new job on the banks of the Severn.

It was originally allocated in the 1920s to a new road called Western Avenue, a major new route forming an approach to Central London from the west.
The northbound linking carriageways are— (a) the G link road connecting the M1 to the M45 at junction 17 of the M1, commencing where it diverges from the M1 northbound and ending at the zone sign; and
The plans as of Autumn 2003 will cause the realignment of the road between Catthorpe and Swinford away from the interchange, which in turn will mean the A14 from this interchange to Junction 1 will be upgraded to motorway. The Junction also forms part of the local road network linking the villages in the surrounding area.
