Cottonwood Pass has been closed to through traffic since 2017 for a project to repave the eastern side, Chaffee County Road 306, for the first time since the 1980s, and pave Gunnison County Road 206 to the west for the first time.

The pass is newly paved from Buena Vista to Taylor Reservoir, this is a bucket list trip.Cottonwood Pass was closed for two and one half years to complete the paving project.

The final dates for the Cottonwood Pass paving project completion are in sight, and the contractor, United Companies, is requesting to keep the highway closed until June 17 to get the work done in the final push of spring, before the project completion date slated for mid-July.
